ACADEMIC MENTORSHIP

As a tutor, I work to establish a strong student-tutor rapport built on my preparedness and expertise in my subject areas. I work at the student's pace, carefully tailoring my explanations and unpacking academic material based on the student's individual learning style and preference. I enjoy asking good questions and listening to my students in order to learn more about how they think and what excites them about the material at hand. I have cultivated this teaching philosophy over the past six years tutoring 25+ hours a week to yield the greatest intellectual and academic growth without sacrificing the mental health and well-being of my students.

Results

My students learn how to:

  • “read like a professor” — purposefully and critically analyze complex literary and historical texts

  • construct effective arguments based on sound textual evidence

  • approach writing as a craft grounded in the “rules” of standard written English as well as organization, syntax, diction, focus, clarity, and nuance

  • strengthen their writing approach — outlining, revising, editing, rewriting

  • produce clear and coherent writing grounded in craft and approach

  • articulate their own ideas verbally and ask relevant questions

  • plan and organize their homework time effectively

I’ve found that most of my students come to me with very little understanding of what makes a good writer. Learning how to write well is an immensely personal process, and the skills I cultivate in my students set them up for better grades on their papers, in-class participation, and overall confidence and joy in reading and writing.
