Two-day, Personal Statement Boot Camp
Are you daunted by the personal statement?
Join me for this two-day, in-person bootcamp where I will demystify the process. With my guidance, you will mine for content, choose your topic, plan your story, get personalized feedback, and finish a solid first draft of your personal statement (and have fun while you’re doing it).
2-day boot camps can be set up for groups of 6+ students. Please feel free to contact me at akmckeon@gmail.com if you’d like to set up a boot camp for a group of students.
Schedule
Day 1 (10:00a-3:00p)
On our first day we will brainstorm— Vulnerability exercises, finding symbolism in your life, personality tests, and more. We will reflect and generate lots of material to build your personal story.
You will also learn how to structure your essay. I’ll provide you with easy to follow road maps and outlines. Narrative? Challenge? I’ve got you covered no matter what you’re writing.
Finally, you will choose your topic! I’ll teach you what makes a good essay topic and why. By the end of day one, you will feel confident that your essay will portray you in the best light possible.
Create a clear outline for your personal statement. A good idea without a clear structure can diminish the impact of your story and the potential to leave a lasting impression on the admissions counselors. Based on the type of story you’d like to tell, I’ll show you the best way to organize your ideas.
Day 2 (10:00a-3:00p)
Revising is at the heart of the writing process. Learn how to make your story compelling through the use of seamless transitions, specific details and word choice, and style. I will break down the editing process, modeling how to approach your essay with a critical eye.
We will also cover the Activities List on this final day! I will go through 1) why the activities list is so important, 2) how to develop content for your list, 3) show you tons of examples, and more! I will then give you time to work on a skeleton of your activities list for the Common/UC app.
